Symonds: 2011 Virgin had potential

Posted on Jan 23, 2012

Marussia Racing consultant Pat Symonds believes that the team’s 2011 car had very good potential in some areas but was badly hamstrung by poor aerodynamics. After relying solely on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for its first two designs, the ex-Virgin team is embracing windtunnel technology as part of its design restructuring, which has also seen the exit of former partner Wirth Research and the announcement of a new collaboration with McLaren

V8 Supercar Showdown Looms Large.

Posted on Jan 23, 2012

The iRacing V8 Supercar series by Bigpond Sport continues to thrill, and the top split is heading for a showdown worthy of it’s immense status. This epic iRacing event will take place at Road Atlanta this Monday 23rd January. The final season for 2011/12 has been a story of intense, consistent rivalry between Trans-Tasman’s Madison Down, Tatts.com Racing’s Mitchell McLeod and Nfinity Esports’ Rens Broekman. While Down has had the upper hand, indeed dominating most rounds, McLeod has shown him up enough to stay in the chase. “Road Atlanta will be bigger than Ben Hur…” Right now, the gap between Down and McLeod, first and second, is a measly 42 points. Meanwhile, a dropping-worst-round points system stands to benefit Broekman. Since our last report on a messy Round Six at [...]

2012 Volkswagen Beetle 2.5 Automatic Tested: Not Necessarily One for the Boys

Posted on Jan 22, 2012

Longer, lower, wider. Those words were a Detroit marketing mantra in the 1950s, when the original Volkswagen Beetle began its march to immortality here in the U.S. But of course the thing that made the Bug so lovable, and such a counterculture icon, was that it possessed none of those traits. Citroen duo predict difficult Monte

Posted on Jan 21, 2012

Citroen drivers Sebastien Loeb and Mikko Hirvonen are predicting difficult conditions on this week’s Monte Carlo Rally following a change of weather in the build-up to the event. Eight-time world champion Loeb explained that conditions had been mild when the crews started their preparations for the WRC season-opener, but that the roads had become more difficult on the eve of the rally, which kicks off tomorrow. “The first two days in the recce it was looking like a tarmac rally, with wet and humid conditions in some places,” said Loeb

Video: Nissan Juke-R takes on Gallardo, 458 Italia and SLS AMG in Dubai

Posted on Jan 21, 2012

Filed under: Performance, Etc., Videos, Crossover, Nissan, Middle East

The Nissan Juke-R found some adventurous extracurriculars to take part in while in Dubai to pace the Dunlop 24-Hour race. Nissan said it would be making a film of the Juke-R taking on other street-legal supercars in the Dubai International Marina, but that race is meant to include a Mercedes/McLaren SLR-engined Mercedes-Benz SLK.

This appears to be something different, with the Juke-R going up against a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, a Mercedes SLS AMG, and a Ferrari 458 Italia. Lucas Ordonez, the first GTAcademy winner from 2008 is reportedly behind the wheel of the Juke-R. We don’t know the driving level of his competition, but we do know this: Nissan’s little beastie is really, really quick. Check out the (admittedly grainy) video after the jump to have your horizons expanded.

Video: Nothing says “Chip Foose” like… Volkswagen?

Posted on Jan 21, 2012

Filed under: Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Hatchback, Volkswagen, Design/Style

To help tell the story of the 256-horsepower 2012 Golf R, Volkswagen has enlisted aid from an unexpected quarter: hot rodder and kandy-kolored-tangerine-flake-inclined Chip Foose.

Turns out that Mr. Overhaulin’ owned a 1985 Golf GTI and thought the world of it, and he engages in a couple minutes of reminiscing about his Mk II to prove it.

The video is after the jump, and there’s a new Golf R Apple iPad app which should also help those of you looking for more interactive elements when digging into the history of one of the original hot hatches (we’ve included a video of the app after the jump, too).

Five ways to improve F1

Posted on Jan 20, 2012

Emerson Fittipaldi in his heyday © Sutton Images

In an interview in the Times, former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi?s outlined his five-point plan to enhance Formula One. Cut costs ?They spend a fortune in wind-tunnel testing alone. Reduce costs and the slowest teams would catch up and make it more even.? Limit downforce ?They need to reduce enormously the downforce in the cars, the only way to bring back overtaking. We need more mechanical grip so that you have longer braking areas, can set up the car coming out of a corner, get in the slipstream and then overtake.? Close the pitlane ?When the safety car goes out they should close the pitlane. Now it?s just a lottery.? Lift ban on team orders ?It is a very stupid rule. It?s why they are called teams, it?s why they have two cars. If a driver is leading in the championship, everything has to go in his favour. What is wrong with that? It?s so easy for teams to camouflage their orders anyway. All they need to do is tell one guy on the radio he has a problem with his brakes. They can bend the rules very easily. In the old days they would even swap cars, so why do we have this ban now?? Retain traditional grands prix ?These places are the soul of racing. The Americas are under-represented. We have Canada back, but there is no USA, no Argentina, no Mexico. We need to stay in the heartlands.?

Rider: BBC should show more racing

Posted on Jan 20, 2012

Steve Rider has called on the BBC to broadcast more top-level motorsport in a bid to boost its diminished coverage of Formula 1 this year. Rider, who has fronted F1 broadcasts for both the BBC and ITV in the past, will form part of Sky’s line-up when its contract to broadcast all grands prix live in the UK commences this year. He believes that it is time for the BBC to support top domestic and international championships, such as world rallying and British Formula 3, to make up for losing its deal to show full live coverage of the F1 season to Sky this year.

Finding a budget in Formula 1

Posted on Jan 20, 2012

People often ask how Formula 1 teams are funded. It is not a subject about which there is much information available. Most of the teams have annual tax returns which become public but these do not (generally) give breakdowns of where revenues were generated. Teams gain money from different sources: notably sponsorship, merchandising and in [...]

Surtees urges F1 to help young drivers

Posted on Jan 18, 2012

John Surtees has called for Formula 1 teams and the FIA to do more to make sure top young drivers aren’t prevented from reaching the pinnacle of the sport due to a lack of money. Speaking on the main stage at AUTOSPORT International to promote the charity set up in memory of his late son Henry, the 1964 world champion said he was disappointed to see the number of drivers buying seats in Formula 1 going up again. “We’ve returned to a situation like in the 1970s where one or two teams – including my own back then ? have to take drivers with budgets,” said Surtees.
